✅with our first weekend of warm weather in Melbourne I thought it was the perfect opportunity to finally pack away the Winter Woolies. I say this with a little regret as I love the cooler months, wearing layers and of course wearing Australian Merino Wool 🧶it was a big day spent in the laundry washing each piece, hanging them out in the warm sunshine to dry, then giving them a final press before packing them away until next Autumn. It’s important to thoroughly clean knitwear before packing away, especially if there are any food or sweat residues as moths live to lay their eggs where there is a potential food source for their larvae, which can lead to much heartbreak when your favourite knit has been used for buffet dining during its time in hibernation. I prefer to use a gentle laundry detergent that is kind to merino wool my recommendation is a product from @thedirtcompany “wool & delicate wash detergent” look them up when you have a minute, I really believe in what they’re doing in this realm. A light press restores the natural lustre and softness of merino wool ready to enjoy for the next Autumn | Winter season. We love clothing that makes noise, it’s like having your own personal sound system….. Which makes us wonder how the term “Loud” clothing developed. Were clothes originally called “Loud” because they actually made a noise? In the Mid 19th Century, taffeta and the silk used in dresses was loud- eye witness accounts discuss people either admiring or complaining of the rustling sounds these heavy gowns made. Around the 1830’s a type of plain woven silk called “Gros De Naples” meaning “Thick of Naples” was a popular choice for dresses during that period. The fabric was expensive, resistant and had the added bonus of creating a pleasant rustling sound as the wearer entered a room. The noise a dress made was considered a sign of wealth and status. However, not everyone enjoyed the sound effects created by these fabrics with some observers remarking that “Rustling silks are especially annoying in church, as the least movement of the wearer causes them to make a noise sufficient to make inaudible for a moment the voice of the preacher” This season we chose a beautiful “faille” weave high tech Cotton | Nylon to use in the Ally Utility Dress, Reserve Utility Jacket and Parachute Skirt styles. They are wonderful to wear as they demonstrate a modern work wear utility, whilst complementing the functional design aesthetic of each style. As you can hear in this video the “Rustling” noise the fabric makes evokes the sound of dry leaves or moving paper so the way the wearer moves within the garment becomes a sensory experience both in terms of the “Rustling” sounds and the malleable crispness of the fabric.
